While the greatest benefit of two-way radio use is “collective intelligence” (described in an earlier blog post), two-way radios can be used for more than just simple PTT (push-to-talk) style communications.

Yes, it is. Two-way radio is the answer to your team communications needs.

Let’s talk about costs and the ever-sought RoI – Return on Investment. No, two-way radios aren’t free, but a properly designed system, using professional grade equipment, will boost the efficiency and productivity of your team.

Collective Intelligence

The biggest advantage to two-way radio communications is the concept of collective intelligence. Follow me on this example. You are part of a ten (10) person maintenance team tasked with maintaining the facilities and operations of your organization. You go to grab “Tool X” and it’s missing. If you rely on cell phone communications, you have to:
1) grab your cell phone,
2) go to the contacts/phone app on your cellular device,
3) find the name of the contact you want to call,
4) dial wait for the called party to pick up before voicemail kicks in,
5) if they pick up, exchange pleasantries and ask if they know where “Tool X” is.
6) if they don’t know or don’t pick up, hang up and start over with the next contact.
This scenario becomes exacerbated if there are coverage issues, people are on their phones, the cell network is busy/congested, etc. Now multiply the time spent by (potentially) the number of people on your team. You’ll probably have to get a hold of a few people before reaching somebody knows where “Tool X’ is.

Now repeat the scenario with two-way radio:
1) grab the two-way radio,
2) press the PTT (push to talk) button,
3) say, “has anybody seen “Tool X”?”,
4) wait for the response of the person with “Tool X”.
You’ve just contacted all nine (9) of your teammates in four steps, using two-way radio, with literally no more that ten (10) seconds of effort.

Starting to see the RoI value in two-way radio?

Two-Way Radio Ruggedness and Service Life

Professional two-way radios are designed to meet very specific criteria for ruggedness and reliability. MIL-STD-810 is commonly used to evaluate two-way radio equipment. This is an accelerated test performed on the products to simulate the stresses and environment the equipment will see over its service lifetime. Both Kenwood and Hytera design their equipment to be compliant with MIL-STD-810G and test their equipment in accordance with those standards.

Another common rating for two-way equipment is the IP rating – Ingress Protection. It consists of two digits, IPxy, where “x” is a number from 0 → 6 and represents the device’s protection against solid particulates – sand, dust, filings, etc. The “y” is a number from 0 → 10, indicating the device’s protection against water ingress. Again, both Kenwood and Hytera offer equipment that meets IP54, IP55, IP67 and IP68 ratings. IP68 means the device is submersible in water for at least 30 minutes (often longer), at a depth of over three (3) feet, with no ill effect.

With a little care and effort, you can easily expect a service life of five (5) to seven (7) years out of your two way radio. Two-way radio batteries provide rated capacities for about three (3) to five (5) years. Speaker microphones usually last about five (5) years and other audio accessories don’t last quite that long.

Two-way radios can also have their usable service life extended through service and repair. Many of the common points of failure are well known and can be repaired. Kind of like changing the tires on your car – not necessarily a consumable, but designed to be repaired/replaced.

Recurring Fees – not required, your choice

Another huge advantage of two-way radio is the lack of recurring fees in many cases. If you’re looking to cover a building, campus or similar, most of the time you can do this without incurring any recurring fees. You purchase and maintain the equipment and license. Those are your only costs.

You can opt for service that covers metropolitan areas and wider, but that kind of service comes with a monthly recurring fee, as additional infrastructure is required to support communications at those distances.

Beware Range Reduction – Audio Accessories and Low-Profile Antennas.

Two way radio users have many different accessories at their disposal to enhance the system functionality. Speaker microphones, lapel microphones, and low profile – or stubby – antennas are an appealing option for many. When used properly, both accessory types can enhance the usability and functionality of a two way radio system. But, like most things in life, that enhancement comes at a cost – usable radio range. The use of low profile antennas and audio accessories must be taken into account at the outset of a system design to ensure adequate signal in present and can overcome the attenuation introduced by the involved accessories. When you perform your live coverage test before you purchase – you do test the proposed radio system before you initially buy it, right?? – make sure your test mimics how the radios will be used when deployed.

What affects radio range?

Radio waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, just like visible light. And just like visible light, certain materials allow the wave to pass relatively unimpeded (clear glass), certain materials diminish the intensity of the wave (waxed paper) and certain materials block the wave altogether (cardboard). How a material affects the wave is based on the molecular structure of the material and the frequency/wavelength of the wave. That simply means that not all waves are affected in the same way by the same material. For example, a piece of cardboard will block all visible light from passing though, but has relatively no affect on radio signals. Conversely, some energy efficient windows utilize a metallic coating that only slightly affects visible light, but has a severe attenuating affect on radio signals.

How do audio accessories affect the radio waves?

One of the primary purposes of an audio accessory, or at least a major result of their use, is that the two way radio is kept on the user’s belt. The human body presents a very large impediment to radio signals. At low levels, it is not dangerous, it just simply absorbs the radio signal. In many cases, the reduction can be 1, 2 even 3 orders of magnitude (10x, 100x, 1000x). That can really shrink the range of your radio communications. Additionally, the antennas on the two way radios are designed to be in free space, with no objects directly touching them. The effect of an object (like your waist) touching the antenna is that the antenna becomes detuned – or less efficient at the desired frequency. This all adds up to reduced range.

How do low-profile or stubby antennas affect range?

This can get a little heady, but here goes… All radio antennas’ dimensions are related to the frequency or frequencies, at which, the antenna is designed to radiate. Antennas, again, are a compromise. They’re good at a wide range of frequencies, but not great at any one frequency – at least any one frequency of consequence to the end user. The most common two way radio antenna is the 1/4-wave whip. Other antennas employ different polarizations or loading techniques reduce antenna height (but not width) or to “fool” the radio’s transmitter into see the proper loading. Just like a car engine, if there is no load attached to a two way radio, bad things can happen. Just because these low-profile antennas have fooled the transmitter into seeing the right load, it doesn’t mean the signal isn’t negatively affected. You can put a car on a dyno, but you ain’t goin’ anywhere.

Ultimately, the affect of low profile antennas is less than keeping a radio on your hip. Signals may be reduced by 2-times to maybe 10-times.

What can be done?

In some cases, moving to digital modulation (NXDN, DMR, P25) can provide the necessary “oomph” to make up for the shortcomings of losses introduced by these accessories.

The best course of action is to make sure you test your proposed radio system before you buy it. In most cases, a very similar radio system can be temporarily set up at your facility to provide a proof of concept. During that test, use stubby antennas and audio accessories if you plan on using those accessories now or in the future. As the radio system matures and new people come into the purchasing fray, the prospect of using these accessories is appealing, to the new folks, but nobody has every talked to them about the potential drawbacks of these accessories. Remember to plan for the future.

Two Way Radio Licensing, The FCC and You…

Yes, you need a license to operate your Land Mobile Radio (LMR) professional two way radio equipment.

What is an FCC License and what does it mean to me?

When you have an FCC License to operate your LMR equipment (47CFR90), you may legally operate your equipment within the bounds of the license and be reasonably guaranteed that no other users will be interfering with your communications. You will have a reasonable guarantee of clear communications where authorized. Now, that’s in theory. In practice, several factors may contribute to interference issues. However, the law requires organizations to have an FCC license as the first line of defense in keeping the wireless spectrum in order and usable for all. The Title 47 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations (47CFR90.427(b)) states, “Except for frequencies used in accordance with §90.417, no person shall program into a transmitter frequencies for which the licensee using the transmitter is not authorized.” Not only can you not transmit on unlicensed frequencies, they should not even be programmed into your transmitting equipment.

What is the FCC?

The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is a bipartisan independent federal administrative agency which is overseen by the US Congress. Formed by the Communications Act of 1934 (amended in 1996), its purpose is to regulate all US interstate and US international radio, television, wire, satellite and cable communications. At its helm are are five (5) presidentially appointed commissioners, who must also be confirmed by the US Senate. Title 47 of the United State Code of Federal Regulations contains all of the FCC rules and regulations. Land Mobile Radio is governed by Part 90 of said Title (47CFR90).

Why does the FCC exist?

With the discovery of wireless communications technologies, in the late 1800s, the wireless landscape soon became analogous to the wild west. Broadcasting monopolies and “power wars” soon came into being. The usable “amount” of wireless frequencies, set aside for communications, is finite. When you take into account all of the users spread across the US, even within major metro areas, there is no way for each licensee to have unique frequencies. Organizations would build more powerful transmitters and transmit right over the top of their competitors. Wireless communications could not be reasonably guaranteed.

Of the many areas within the purview of the FCC is wireless communications licensing and coordination. Frequencies must be reused to allow all users equal access, due to their limited nature. Coordination is the process by which specific frequencies are chosen with the intent to geographically disperse use of the same frequency. Basically, making sure the same frequency is not in use by two or more agencies that are too close to each other, causing interference.

Once the appropriate frequencies have been selected and coordinated, they may be issued to an end user on an FCC License.

How do I obtain an FCC License?

Viking Communications personnel can take you through the process of obtaining an FCC license for your business. Licenses are valid for ten (10) years from the date of issuance. The specifics of your license will depend on the two way radio equipment you plan to use, where you plan to use it and how you plan to use it – lots of variables. BEWARE THE FALSE FCC!

Opportunistic companies will send out solicitations for money to “keep you in compliance.” Their stationary and logos look very official and can easily be mistaken for the actual US FCC. Whether this is intentional or not is up for debate, but don’t be taken in. They usually solicit a few hundred dollars and offer to keep your license in compliance and scare you with the dollar amounts of fines. Don’t patronize them. You will only have more difficulty when in comes time for us to renew or modify your license. The actual US FCC will never directly solicit any money from licensee.

Two-way radio’s one drawback over the years has been long range communications. Sure, communicating within a building, campus, or even metro area was easily accomplished, but going much farther out than that quickly became problematic. Then came Nextel® – the first convergence of two-way communications and cellular technologies. How Does Two-Way Radio Work?

Two-way radio works by converting audio to radio waves that are then transmitted through the air. These radio waves are received by other radios which convert the radio waves back to audio.

The conversion to radio waves can be sent as an analog signal or a digital signal, with digital transmission being the more modern technology. With digital radio, it is possible to send other types of data over the radio waves such as text messages and status updates. It is even possible to encrypt data when using digital radio to stop people from using your network without your permission.

What Frequencies Does Two-Way Radio Communication Use?

Two-way radio works between the frequencies of 30 MHz (Megahertz) and 1000 MHz, also known as 1 GHz (Gigahertz). This range of two-way frequencies is divided into two categories:

Very High Frequency (VHF) – Range between 30 MHz and 300 MHz
Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) – Range between 300 MHz and 1 GHz

From these ranges, most two-way radio equipment falls into the 136 – 174 MHz and 403 – 527 MHz parts of the spectrum and must be licensed. Each country has its own organization tasked with allocating licenses, but some two-way radio frequencies are allocated as license-free (for instance, PMR446 at 446MHz).
